frequently when realtors, builders, designers and Homeowner associations ask about a house one of the first questions they have is “What’s the square footage?’ It’s a quick and easy way of determining a layout, an overall idea of the expanse of a home, but especially in designing a custom residence, it isn’t the most effective technique.

macoyosh prefers to lead with “tell me about your vision” and we go from there because home design is about so much more than the physical size of a given structure. preconceived notions may dictate that an 8,000 square foot home is prefered for a truly tremendous luxury home, but not every homeowner takes into account the time and expense of cleaning such a home, running climate control, mortage payments, terrain requirements, functionality, quality of life and actual comfort. in the hypothetical 8,000 square foot home, land and expense may require building upward into a split level residence, which includes stairs throughout. Have we taken into account lack of mobility several years hence when we will no longer be able to employ stairs? Or if we have, did we take into account having a space that allows for an elevator?

when we start with our lifestyle and move from there, we answer questions before we even ask them. Will we be using this as a primary residence or a vacation home? We see the principle hold true in terms of the tiny houses trend as well. So frequently in the tiny house era we would see potential homeowners excited to join the trend of minimalism.
